It Is All About Your Environment

It is not uncommon for someone to feel down when feeling depressed. However, when that happens, there are things that you can do to feel more upbeat. If you are in an apartment or a house, turn on the lights. Bright lights are a good contrast to a blue mood. Your brain is very responsive to the environment. If you feel upbeat but begin to spend a lot of time in a dark room that feels lifeless, chances are that your mood will start going downhill.

Another external stimulus that can affect your mood is sound. Whether it comes from nature or from music, sounds can have striking effects in your mood. The sound of waves splashing in the ocean or the singing of birds in a forest can have a relaxing effect. Similarly, whether it is heavy metal, easy listening, rock and roll, or classic music, they can all affect your mood positively or negatively depending on your personality traits.

Figuring out the stimuli that makes you feel good is extremely important in helping your mood improve when it starts to go south. Because of your personality traits, the stimuli that work for you may be different from everyone else’s. As such, it is important that you create an inventory of the ones that improve your mood and that you create the environment that is perfect for you. The goal is not to go from feeling blue to feeling upbeat but rather to create the kind of environment that will help you feel at peace with yourself.
