Can Clinical Depression be a Positive Experience?

There are those who wonder whether anything good can come out of feeling chronically depressed. Chronic depression can be physically and mentally debilitating. It is like a black hole sucking every ounce of energy out of your body. However, I have never heard anyone that managed to overcome depression, say that living through that experience was not worth it.

People that have managed to overcome depression agree that it has brought to them the type sense of peace and satisfaction, in their lives, that they would not have otherwise had. They feel that they understand themselves better than they would have without experiencing depression. They feel that they are able to appreciate the simple things in life in a way that very few people can. There is also research suggesting that depression is helpful in the long term because you can develop stronger coping skills and become more resilient. People that are more resilient have a better chance at becoming successful. Studies have shown that resilience is the key to achieving unremarkable success.

As such, there is no reason to feel like you are the most unfortunate person on earth for having to deal with chronic depression. You may actually be better off if you experience it. The important thing is to accept the challenges of dealing with chronic depression and that you choose to live to see another day when you feel that you are at a dead end. A dead end often times becomes the road that can drive you out of the black hole to experience the sense of peace and satisfaction that only those who have experienced clinical depression can.
